If you are having trouble adding a Victron SmartShunt as a sensor to your RV Whisper system, these detailed instructions and troubleshooting tips should help you.

You first need to install your Victron SmartShunt and use the VictronConnect phone app to connect to it.

INSTALL TIP 1:  During the “Add Sensor” step below, you MAY need to temporarily move your RV Whisper system so it is close to the Victron SmartShunt.  Why? The “Add Sensor” process requires a lot of bluetooth communications between your RV Whisper system and the SmartShunt, having them close together with no objects between them allows the bluetooth communication to complete quicker and more reliably.

OPERATIONS TIP 1:  The Bluetooth radio signal strength between the Victron SmartShunt and your RV Whisper Monitor Station is limited the same as between your SmartShunt and your phone’s VictronConnect phone app.  You will likely need to install the RV Whisper system near your Victron SmartShunt (typically just above the battery compartment in a motorhome).  You can find a good location by using the VictronConnect phone app to CONNECT to your SmartShunt from the location you want to install your RV Whisper system.  If the VictronConnect phone app can reliably CONNECT to your SmartShunt, then your RV Whisper system should also work in that location.

DETAILED INSTALLATION STEPS

These instructions are more detailed than the instructions displayed in the “Add Sensor” page of RV Whisper.

(STEP 1)  Use the VictronConnect phone app to connect to your SmartShunt and update all firmware to the latest (including the Bluetooth Firmware).  Your Victron SmartShunt BLUETOOTH INTERFACE needs to be running Bluetooth Firmware Version 2.31 or higher.

(STEP 2)  Use the VictronConnect phone app to connect to your SmartShunt and set “Bluetooth GATT Service” to “Enabled” then cycle power to the SmartShunt.
(STEP 3)  Use the VictronConnect phone app to connect to your SmartShunt and:
  • (A) set the “Custom name” to a name you will remember with no spaces in it
    • NOTE: Make Sure there are no spaces (including no leading or trailing spaces) in the “Custom name” before you save it.
  • (B) set the PIN code to six digits that you will remember
  • (C) Turn off VE.Smart networking if it is enabled (VE.Smart Networking can be turned on AFTER the Validate Wireless Sensor step has successfully completed).
(STEP 4) Now use the RV Whisper App :  “Add Sensor” -> Add Wireless Sensor -> Serial Number -> select VictronSmartShunt -> enter the “Custom name” and PIN from Step 3, in the following format:  “CustomName:PIN” e.g. “MySmartShunt:123456”.
  • NOTE:  make sure there are no spaces in the CustomName or PIN
(STEP 5) Click “Validate Wireless Sensor” which can take 30 seconds or more and continue.
