NOTE:  Only 2.4 GHz WiFi is supported. (NOT 5 GHz Wifi).

RV Whisper Monitor Stations (RVM1, RVM2, RVM3) can only see and connect to 2.4 GHz WiFi networks.

  • If your RVMx can see your WiFi network, but can not connect to it even after you are sure you have provided the correct wifi password, skip to the “RV Whisper Monitor Station Troubleshooting” section below.
  • If your RVMx can not see your RV WiFi network at all, it could be due to your WiFi network being a 5 GHz WiFi network.
    • Some newer WiFi devices have only a 5GHz WiFi network enabled by default.  You may need to use your WiFi device’s administration / setup feature to:
      • Enable a 2.4 GHz WiFi network
      • Create a network name for the new 2.4 GHz WiFi network
      • Create the network password for the new 2.4 GHz WiFi network

(Pro Tip: if you are changing to a new WiFi router, you may want to create a 2.4 GHz WiFi network on it with the same name and password as your old WiFi network.   This will let all of your devices that connected to your old WiFi network connect to your new WiFi network without having to change the WiFi settings on every phone, computer, tablet, TV, etc…  Just make sure you don’t have both your old and new WiFi routers turned on at the same time).

RV Whisper Monitor Station Troubleshooting

If your RVM1, RVM2 or RVM3 system is not connecting to your RV WiFi, here are detailed troubleshooting steps you can take before contacting RV Whisper support.

  • USB power problem due to Cable or USB Power Adapter:

    • Most WiFi reliability issues since early 2024 are due to a problem with either the USB cable or the USB power adapter
      • The reason is if the USB power is marginal or intermittent, the WiFi function (which uses the most power) fails first.
      • Check these 2 items before continuing:
  • Check if the green light works as expected:

    • Unplug power from your RVM for 5 seconds and plug it back in.  Make sure the USB power cable is fully inserted.
    • The green light is inside the RVM case next to where the USB power cable attaches.
    • The green light should turn on after a few seconds and then it should blink fairly quickly (about 45 seconds for an RVM1 and RVM3, and about 90 seconds for an RVM2)
      • Tech Tip:  The green light blinks to indicated “disk activity”.  There is lots of disk activity during the bootup phase, then the disk activity slows down a lot.
      • (RVM1 only:  the red light inside the case should always remain red when plugged in.
        • If the red light inside an RVM1 ever blinks, that means the USB Power cable is the problem. WiFi uses a lot of power and if the USB power cable is not adequate, the WiFi chip can not work correctly.
        • The green light for an RVM1 indicates disk activity)
    • When the green light stops blinking after 45 seconds (RVM1, RVM3) or  90 seconds (RVM2), the RVMx-nnnn “Local WiFi” network should become visible.
    • If the green light does not behave as expected, the most likely causes are a bad USB power cable connection or a hardware failure.
      • Try the USB Cable Squeeze as shown here: USB Cable Squeeze Directions
      • If you suspect a hardware failure due to the way the green light behaves and you are unable to fix it with the USB Cable Squeeze or with a different USB power cable, contact support@rvwhisper.com.  Provide as many details of the troubleshooting steps you have taken so far.
  • Check if the RVMn-nnnn “Local WiFi” network ever appears.

    • Use a phone, table or laptop to check if your RVMn-nnnn “Local WiFi” network is ever visible when powering it on and after the green light stops its rapid flashing after 45 seconds (RVM1, RVM3), or 90 seconds (RVM2)
      • NOTE:  The “Local WiFi” network refers to the private WiFi network your RVM broadcasts for setup purpose.  The “Local WiFi” network has the same name as your RVM serial number (RVMN-NNNN)
      • If the “Local WiFi” network appears and disappears, then:
        • First try the USB Cable Squeeze and start over: USB Cable Squeeze Directions
        • If the USB Cable Squeeze does not fix the problem, and your Local WiFi network appears and disappears, you should follow the instructions below to “Forget All WiFi Settings” for your RVM system.
      • If the “Local WiFi” network never appears after rebooting, contact support@rvwhisper.com and please include the troubleshooting steps you have tried so far.
  • Check if your RVM is connected to your RV WiFi:

    • If the RVMx-xxxx “Local WiFi” network appears, you can use a laptop computer to connect to your RVMx:
      • Connect your laptop to the “Local WiFi” RVMx-xxx network
        • use the “Local WiFi Password” printed on your RVM system label
      • your laptop will complain that your RVMx-xxxx WiFi network has no internet access which is exactly what is expected at this point.
      • use a browser and go to https://10.1.10.1
      • If the RV Whisper web page appears it will display its WiFi status.  If you need to change WiFi settings, then login with:
        • username: rvadmin
        • password: rvadmin
        • (This setup username and password are also printed on your RVM label)
      • Click on the “Gear Icon” for Settings
        • Click on Network
          • You may want to “Forget All WiFi Settings” if you have already tried to connect to your WiFi network but have been unsuccessful.
        • Select your RV WiFi network, carefully enter your RV WiFi password, then Save and Reboot
  • Forget all WiFi Settings on your RV Whisper Monitor Station

    • If you have ever connected (or tried to connect) to more than one WiFi network (successfully or not), and you are having trouble with your RVM connecting to your RV WiFi device, you should follow these steps to clear out the WiFi Settings in your RVM system:
      • NOTE:  If you are having trouble completing this step, you may need to Temporarily turn off all WiFi hotspots / routers / networks that your RVMx has ever tried to connect to in order to finish the “Forget All WiFi Settings” procedure.
        • Don’t forget your mobile phone hotspots, home WiFi networks (if you are near your home), campground networks, etc…  You may have to take your RVMx away from the campground network to do this procedure.
    • Connect to your RVMx and “Forget All WiFi Settings”:
      • Either Use the RV Whisper Launcher phone app -> Login over Local WiFi -> Settings (gear icon) -> Network -> Forget All WiFi Settings -> Save and Reboot
      • Or use a laptop to:
        • connect to your RVMx-xxxx local wifi network
        • “Local WiFi password” is printed on the RVM label
        • use a browner and go to http://10.1.10.1
        • Login with user: rvadmin, password: rvadmin
        • Click Settings (gear icon) -> Network -> Forget All WiFi Settings -> Save and Reboot
      • contact support@rvwhisper.com if the “Forget All WiFi Settings” button is not displayed in your version of the RV Whisper software.
      • Turn your WiFi router / hotspot back on if you turned it off
      • After your RV Whisper Monitor Station reboots (about 2 minutes), and your WiFi router has started up, use the “Login over Local WiFi” button on the RV Whisper Launcher phone app to connect your monitor station to your WiFi network.

Check if there is an update to the RV Whisper software and update if available.

    • If you are able to successfully connect your RV Whisper Monitor Station to Wifi, you should update to the latest software to improve reliability and performance.  There have been significant improvements to WiFi reliability over the past year.
